Painting the Town: Bali Hai Motel

Bali Hai Motel

The Bali Hai Motel is a small, newly-founded establishment in the heart of Luganville, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. The property is quite elegant and sophisticated for this region. It offers quality, comfortable accommodation, is set amongst tropical gardens, and includes features such as a swimming pool for a very affordable price.

I was commisioned to create signage for the exterior wall. The motel has no existing branding, and the main specification was to feature hibiscus flowers.

'Bali Hai' is a reference from the book 'Tales of the South Pacific' written by James A. Michener, and is based on his experiences while stationed in here, in Espirirtu Santo, during World War II.

In literature and film, Bali Hai is an mystical, exotic paradise. In real life it is Ambae Island, which can be seen from our shores on a clear day.  Locally, the popular belief is that women were taken to Ambae for protection during the occupation by the USA armed forces.
